A Twenty-Minute Soak Ritual After a Barre Class
What to do in the twenty minutes after a hard class, and how to make them count for something.
Barre class ends and you walk out with legs that are not quite yours, in the best way. You got what you came for. Then you get in the car, check your phone at the first red light, and the class turns into another thing that happened to you today instead of something you gave yourself.
A soak is not a treatment. It is warm water, salt and a smell you like, and what it gives you is twenty minutes where nothing is asked of you. For a body that has just worked hard, that is enough. Here is how I do it.
Minutes 0 to 2: Set up before you get in. Phone goes in the other room. Not face down, not on silent. In the other room. Towel where you can reach it without standing up. Water warm enough to be a decision, not hot enough to make you uncomfortable. If you have a reason to be careful with heat, or with a bath at all, check that with someone qualified before you do this. That is not a small print thing. That is real.
Minutes 2 to 4: Salt first, then candle. Two cups of the soak under running water so it dissolves instead of sitting in the bottom of the tub. Salt goes in before you do. Then light the candle and set it somewhere you can see it from where you will be sitting in the water. Not on the edge of the tub. Somewhere you can see it without turning your head.
Minutes 4 to 16: The part that is nothing. Get in. Sit down. Do not bring the phone. This is the part people skip, because it looks like nothing is happening. Nothing is happening. That is the content. If you need something to do, pick one thing to notice. The candle flame. The water going still. I usually start with the city, name it to myself, and then stop talking to myself entirely.
You will probably lose track of the time somewhere around minute ten. That is not the point. It is just what happens when you sit still in warm water with nothing to do.
Minutes 16 to 20: Get out slowly. Stand up on your own terms, not fast. Dry off properly, including your feet, because tomorrow-you deserves a dry floor. Blow the candle out, or leave it burning while you put on something comfortable and let the room keep smelling like a place. Then sit down for two minutes with nothing in your hands. Water, if you want it. That is it.
Four minutes of setup, twelve of nothing, four of coming back. Twenty minutes total. The class was for your body. Those twenty minutes are for the rest of you, and they are the part that makes the class worth doing again next week.
Nothing is for sale yet. Leave your address and I will write once, when there is something.
