Los Angeles

Night Jasmine and Warm Asphalt

Los Angeles is a city you smell from a car with the window down. Dry grass on the hills, dust in the light, warm asphalt breathing all evening after a hot day. Then jasmine comes over the top of it from a hedge you will never find again, and it is so sweet it almost hurts. Lime and cut grass somewhere. Sea air if you are near the water, pushing under the freeway smell. Jacaranda in the spring. And at the end of it, everything settling into something soft and a little smoky, the smell of a long day finally being over in a warm place.

The wall

I drove past a Los Angeles wall twice before I stopped the car. It was on the side of a laundry that clearly did not care what was painted on it, so somebody had painted a woman's profile the height of the building, in warm oranges, with her chin up. It was done without permission and without apology. I sat on the curb across from it for twenty minutes with the engine off. Whoever painted that was telling somebody, maybe herself, to hold their head up.

Wear it when the drive was long, the sun is going down, and you are almost home.
