A beach from above on a bright afternoon: rows of sun umbrellas and low beach shelters on the sand, a marina of small boats inside a curved breakwater, the sea beyond, and a seafront promenade along the bottom of the frame.

Tel Aviv

Sesame, Sea Air and Late Sun

Tel Aviv smelled like a late breakfast that never quite ended. Warm sesame and tahini on a paper plate, lemons cut on the same board, coffee that had gone cold while nobody minded. Then you walk to the water and the air changes. Hot sand, salt on your forearms, the stone of an old wall still radiating the whole day's heat at nine at night. There is jasmine in there somewhere, and fig, and under all of it something dark and roasted that holds the light in place. It is the smell of not wanting the evening to end.

The wall

The wall I keep coming back to in Tel Aviv was not a gallery piece. It was a corner on a street I was walking only because I was lost, painted around an old metal shutter. A woman had sprayed words across the middle of it, in a hand that was not careful, and she had painted flowers underneath them anyway. I stood there long enough that people went around me.

Wear it when the day was long and the evening is still warm enough to sit outside.
