Melbourne

Coffee, Laneways and Eucalyptus

Melbourne smells like weather changing while you stand in it. Espresso going through a machine in a doorway the size of a closet, and the wet pavement just outside that keeps the smell low and thick. Crushed eucalyptus from the trees up the hill, sharp and clean and a little bracing in a way I mean kindly. Hot brick after rain. Wet wool on someone standing next to you. Cocoa and leather from a shop with the door open. It is the smell of a city that is very good at staying inside, and of the moment you decide to walk anyway.

The wall

In Melbourne the street art is not hidden. You turn down a lane for a shortcut and the whole wall is painted, and someone is painting over last month's version while you watch. The one I photographed was low down at the end of a lane, where a woman had written a message in block letters, like she was talking to herself. It was not beautiful. It was better than beautiful. I still read the photo when I am low.

Wear it when you need rain, coffee and nobody asking you questions.
